CAREER OPPORTUNITY – COMMODITIES MANAGER (1 Post)

Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) is Uganda’s principal stock exchange, established in May 1997 and licensed to operate as an approved Stock Exchange in June 1997 by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) of Uganda under the Capital Markets (licensing) Regulations 1996.

In 2017, USE was registered as a public limited liability company and approved by the CMA to operate as a demutualized Exchange under the laws of Uganda with a primary mandate to provide an orderly, transparent, and efficient market.

Our core service is the provision of an efficient platform that brings together seekers of capital (companies looking to raise finances) and providers of capital (investors).

In 2020, the USE established the USE Commodities Exchange. The subsidiary’s core mandate is to operate a commodities exchange. A commodities exchange is an exchange, or market, where various commodities are traded. Commodities include agricultural products and other raw materials.

The USE Commodities Exchange (USE Commex) is looking for a commodities manager. Commex Manager shall report to the CEO

Roles include the following:

  • Oversee the onboarding of market participants and commodities onto the market.
  • Searching and applying for funding opportunities and partnership opportunities for the commodities exchange.
  • Interacting with market players in the Agricultural sector for the purpose of forming valuable partnerships and networks that will be beneficial to the work of the USE Commex.
  • Formulating and reviewing policies governing the USE Commex and ensuring that they align with both regional and international standards.
  • Acts as a single point of contact by developing, maintaining, and working to stakeholder engagement strategies and plans.
  • Managing relationships with USE Commex stakeholders including regulators, government agencies, farmers and farmer groups, valuable partners, collateral managers, logistics companies, warehouses etc.
  • Collaborating with the Business Development department and other USE departments to create strategies to reach potential customers, promote customer acquisition, conversion, customer retention and customer loyalty.
  • Facilitating interactions with farmers and farmer groups that includes farmer vetting and partnerships to ensure production of grain that meets both the regional and international standards exclusively for trade on the USE Commex.
  • Conducting field visits and monitoring of field extension officers, farmer groups, logistics etc.
  • Working with Agro-processing organizations to supply farmers with quality inputs.
  • Conduct training and education of market players, stakeholders and the public regarding the work of the commodities exchange.
  • Preparation of periodic reports within the set timelines and providing an update on the departmental activities.
  • Implement the preparation and execution of the strategic plan and also develop new strategic ideologies in line with the business model.

Skills and competencies

  • Knowledge and experience in Uganda’s agricultural sector particularly grains required.
  • Knowledge of grant applications required.
  • Knowledge of Compliance, and procurement procedures
  • Proficient in MS Office suite
  • Experience with Contract Management procedures
  • Knowledge of Supply Chain Management and Project Management.
  • Ability to travel all over the country. Must have a valid driving permit and passport.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in economics, Agriculture, Business Administration, or a related field.
  2. A postgraduate degree (Master’s or MBA) in Agriculture, Economics, or a related field is an added advantage.
  3. A minimum of 5 to 7 years of practical experience in commodities trading, risk management, or closely related fields.
  4.  Previous experience in a managerial or supervisory role, demonstrating leadership and decision-making abilities.
